Managing the Archaeological Heritage – Challenges and Opportunities in Lebanon

The Minister of Culture, Mr. Raymond Araygi, and the President of the Lebanese University, Professor Adnan Al Sayed Hussein, opened a two-day technical workshop entitled “Managing the Archaeological Heritage – Challenges and Opportunities in Lebanon”. An initiative organised by the LEBANESE Ministry of Culture – Directorate General of Antiquities, in cooperation with the Lebanese University and the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and for Tourism in the framework of the European Union-funded ARCHEOMEDSITES Project.

The workshop took place at the Central Administration of the Lebanese University – Mathaf in the presence of the representative of the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and for Tourism, Mr. Michele Colavito and the Dean of the Faculty of Literature and Human Sciences, Dr. Nabil Khatib and a number of university professors in Lebanon, Archeologists from the Directorate General of Antiquities and experts in the field of heritage protection, as well as to students specialising in Archaeology and Restoration of Historic Monuments.

This workshop aimed to present and discuss the tangible heritage management concepts and how to apply them in Lebanon by archaeologists and engineers working in the field of management and conservation of heritage in Lebanon and abroad, such as the Netherlands and Italy. It also aims to present these different topics before students in order to encourage their engagement in this broad and multidisciplinary field of heritage management and respond to the country’s need for more specialists in this field.
